  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Harav Melamed Complains of “Blood Libel” Against Him

Last night (Monday) Harav Melamed sharply attacked the Defense Minister and said his accusations were “a blood libel against me and the holy Torah.”

Shmuel Barzel 15/12/2009 12:34
In a special conference convened “for encouragement and solidarity” with Harav Melamed and the Har Bracha Yeshiva at a synagogue in Bat Yam last night (Monday), Harav Eliezer Melamed referred to Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s decision publicly for the first time. As previously reported, Barak decided to cancel the IDF's arrangement with Yeshivat Har Bracha, headed by Harav Melamed.

In his remarks he said: “The Defense Minister is making a personal blood libel against me.” He also said that would not sign any agreement, since his role as a rabbi is to tell the truth fearlessly, and not to take into consideration the political decisions of the security establishment.

“Barak's accusations are a blood libel which may promote him politically but is destroying the IDF, destroying our unity, and tearing apart the state's democratic foundations," he said.

In his remarks, Rabbi Melamed wondered aloud, and asked: "Can a rabbi not think and speak honestly even in the democratic State of Israel? Should his students be disqualified from army service because he expresses his opinion according to his halachic conscience? Is this the defense minister's responsibility?"

Earlier, the Defense Minister received backing for his decision from the Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and the PM’s office issued a statement saying: "The Prime Minister's staunch stance against insubordination is known to all. The Prime Minister will not intervene in the issue of the Har Bracha yeshiva, and supports Barak's decision. However he hopes that the matter will eventually be solved with understanding."

Calls for Mass Insubordination

At the conference, young men from Hesder Yeshivot gathered outside the synagogue and called to remove the army from political debates, and not to let the army expel Jews from their homes. The young men called for mass insubordination until the army’s arrangement with Yeshivat Har Bracha will return to its previous standing.
