  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Likud Debate on How to Appoint the Attorney General

The Prime Minister wants to present the four candidates receiving the most votes from the Selection Committee to the government for selection of the new Attorney General, but Likud Ministers ask to open the list and allow all the candidates who presented their candidacy to the Committee an opportunity to be chosen as Attorney General, since the Committee broke up without a decision.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu intends to present the four candidates receiving the most votes from the Selection Committee to the government for selection of the new Attorney General, although the Committee broke up without any decision. Despite this, it seems that the task will not be an easy one, following widespread opposition among the Likud ministers.

In a meeting this morning (Sunday) of Likud ministers, the Prime Minister said that since the Committee disbanded, the Justice Minister, Yaakov Neeman, will suggest the candidate for the job. Neeman tends towards one of four candidates receiving the most votes among the Committee members.

However, the Likud ministers told Netanyahu that the number of candidates should not be reduced, since the Committee broke up without resolution. Rather, more potential candidates should be allowed to present their candidacies, for example, all the eleven candidates discussed in the Committee.

According to the Likud ministers, and among them was Environment Minister Gilad Arden, several candidates were disapproved because of their association with aspects of Israeli politics.

It should be noted that the Minister of Justice, Prof. Yaakov Neeman, told the meeting of ministers that although the Search Committee members were asked to take minutes of meetings, nothing was done. It is unclear whether this fact will make Netanyahu’s desire to present the four candidates who received the most votes more difficult or not.
